He lived along that coast now every night and in his dreams he heard the surf roar and saw the native boats come riding through it. He smelled the tar and oakum of the deck as he slept and he smelled the smell of Africa that the land breeze brought at morning. Usually when he smelled the land breeze he woke up and dressed to go and wake the boy. But tonight the smell of the land breeze came very early and he knew it was too early in his dream and went on dreaming to see the white peaks of the Islands rising from the sea and then he dreamed of the different harbours and roadsteads of the Canary Islands. He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach. They played like young cats in the dusk and he loved them as he loved the boy. He simply woke, looked out the open door at the moon and unrolled his trousers and put them on. He urinated outside the shack and then went up the road to wake the boy. He was shivering with the morning cold. But he knew he would shiver himself warm and that soon he would be rowing. The door of the house where the boy lived was unlocked and he opened it and walk in quietly with his his bare feet. The boy was asleep on a cot in the first room and the old man could see him clearly with the light that came in from the dying moon. He took hold of one foot gently and held it until the boy woke and turned and looked at him. 밤마다 노인은 그 꿈속의 해안에서 살다싶이 했고, 꿈속에서 파도소리를 들었고 파도 속을 뚫고 저어오는 토인의 배를 보았다. 노인은 잠속에서 갑판 위에 칠한 타르와, 뱃밥 냄새를 맡았고, 육지에서 불어 오는 아침의 미풍이 실어다 주는 아프리카의 향기를 맡았다. 육지의 미풍향기를 맡을 즈음이면 보통 그는 눈을 떴다. 그리곤 옷을 입고 언제나 소년을 깨우러 가곤 했다. 그러나 오늘밤에는 육지에서 불어 오는 미풍의 향기가 너무 일찍 풍겨와서 그는 꿈속에서도 아직 너무 이르다는 것을 알았다. 그리고 다시 꿈속으로 돌아가서 섬의 흰 산봉우리들이 바다 위에 우뚝 솟은 것을 보고 또 이어서 카나리아 군도의 여러 항구들과 정박장들을 꿈꾸었다. 요즈음, 폭풍우의 꿈, 여자의 꿈, 큰 사건과 큰 고기의 꿈, 싸움 또는 힘을 겨루는 시합의 꿈은 꾸지 않았고, 아내의 꿈도 꾸지 않았다. 이곳저곳 장소에 관한 꿈과 해변의 사자 꿈만 꾸었다. 황혼의 어스름 속에 노는 사자들은 마치 고양이 새끼들 같았고, 노인은 자신이 소년을 사랑하는 것처럼 그 사자들을 사랑하였다. 그러나 소년의 꿈을 꾸는 일은 없었다. 노인은 수월하게 눈을 떴다. 열린 문으로 달을 내다보고 바지를 펴서 입었다. 노인은 오두막 밖에서 오줌을 누고 소년을 깨우러 길을 올라갔다. 노인은 새벽추위에 몸을 부르르 떨었다. 그러나 노인은 한참 떨다 보면 몸이 따뜻 해지리라는 것을 알고 있었고, 또 곧 노를 젓게 되리라는 것도 알았다. 소년이 사는 집의 문은 잠겨져 있지 않았다. 노인은 조용히 문을 열고 맨발로 들어갔다. 소년은 첫째 방 침대 위에 자고 있어서 지는 달에서 비치는 빛으로 똑똑히 알아볼 수 있었다. 노인은 소년의 발 한쪽을 가만히 붙들고 있었다. 이윽고 소년이 눈을 뜨고 얼굴을 돌려 노인을 쳐다 보았다. 노인이 고개를 끄덕 끄덕하자, 소년은 침대 옆 의자에서 바지를 집어 들고 일어나 침대에 앉아서 입었다.
