He did not hurry and he kept his lines straight up and down. but he crowded the current a little so that he was still fishing correctly though faster than he would have fished if he was not trying to use the bird. The bird went higher in the air and circled again, his wings motionless. Then he dove suddenly and the old man saw flying fish spurt out of the water and sail desperately over the surface. "Dolphin," the old man said aloud. "Big dolphin." He shipped his oars and brought a small line from under the bow. It had a wire leader and a medium-sized hook and he baited it with one of the sardines. He let it go over the side and then made it fast to a ring bolt in the stern. Then he baited another line and left it coiled in the shade of the bow. He went back to rowing and to watching the long-winged black bird who was working, now, low over the water. As he watched the bird dipped again slanting his wings for the drive and then swinging them wildly and ineffectually as he followed the flying fish. The old man could see the slight bulge in the water that the big dolphin raised as they followed the escaping fish. The dolphin were cutting through the water below the flight of the fish and would be in the water, driving at speed, when the fish dropped. It is a big school of dolphine, he thought. They are wide spread and the flying fish have little chance. The bird has no chance. The flying fish are too big for him and they go too fast. He watched the flying fish burst out again and again and the ineffectual movements of the bird. That school has gotten away from me, he thought. They are moving out too fast and too far. But perhaps I will pick up a stray and perhaps my big fish is around them. 서두르지 않고, 낚싯줄이 아래 위로 팽팽하도록 유지하면서 가까이 갔다. 그러나 새를 이용하지 않을 때 하는 것보다는 빨랐지만 낚시질에 빈틈이 없게 하기 위해 약간씩 물굽이를 헤치며 나아갔다. 새는 다시 공중으로 높이 올라가서 날개를 움직이지 않은 채 빙빙 돌았다. 그러다가 새는 별안간 수면을 향하여 내려갔고, 그때 노인은 날치가 물위로 튀어 나와 필사적으로 달아나는 것을 보았다. "돌고래 군," 하고 노인은 소리쳤다. "큰 놈이야." 그는 노를 거두어 올려 놓고 이물(뱃머리) 밑에서 작은 낚싯줄을 꺼냈다. 그 줄에는 철사로 만든 목줄과 중간 크기의 낚싯바늘이 달려 있었는데 거기에 정어리 한 마리를 미끼로 달아 놓았다. 그리고 뱃전 너머로 그 낚싯줄을 드리우고는 고물(배후미) 쪽에 있는 쇠고리에 묶어 놓았다. 이어 또 한 개의 낚싯줄에도 미끼를 달아 뱃머리 한 구석에 감아 두었다. 그 다음에는 다시 노를 젓기 시작하면서 저 멀리 날개가 긴 검은 새가 이제는 수면 위로 얕게 날면서 먹이를 찾고 있는 것을 지켜 보았다. 노인이 지켜 보는 동안 그 새는 다시 날개를 비스듬히 뻗고 내려 가더니 날치를 잡으려고 쫒아 가면서 야단스레 날개를 치고 있었으나 부질 없었다. 한편 도망치는 날치를 돌고래가 쫒고 있어서 그 큰 돌고래 때문에 수면이 조금 불룩하게 부풀어 오른 것을 볼 수 있었다. 돌고래는 날치가 날아가는 바로 밑의 바닷물을 헤치며 달리고 있었다. 전속력으로 돌진해서, 튀어 나온 고기가 떨어지면 물속에서 붙잡으려는 것이었다. 돌고래 떼가 크구나, 하고 노인은 생각했다. 그 떼거리가 퍽 넓게 퍼져 있어서 날치가 살아날 가망은 거의 없었다. 하긴 저 새도 고기를 잡을 가망은 거의 없지, 그 새에게는 날치가 너무 크고 너무 빠르니까. 노인은 날치들이 연거푸 물위로 튀어 오르고 또 그것을 잡으려는 새가 부질없이 허둥대는 꼴을 바라보고 있었다. 고래 떼를 이제 놓쳐 버렸군, 하고 노인은 생각했다. 저렇게 멀리 달리고들 있으니, 그러나 혼자 떠돌고 있는 놈이 한 마리쯤 걸릴지도 모르지, 내가 잡을 큰 고기가 아마 그것들 근방에 있을지도 모르지, 하여튼 내가 잡을 큰 고기가 어딘가에 반드시 있을 것이다.
