The clouds over the land now rose like mountains and the coast was only a long green line with the grey-blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue now, so dark that it was almost purple. As he looked down into it he saw the red sifting of the plankton in the dark water and the strange light the sun made now. He watched his lines to see them go straight down out of sight into the water and he was happy to see so much plankton because it meant fish. The strange light the sun made in the water, now that the sun was higher, meant good weather and so did the shape of the clouds over the land. But the bird was almost out of sight now and nothing showed on the surface of the water but some patches of yellow, sun-bleached Sargasso weed and the purple, formalized, iridescent, gelatinous bladder of a Portuguese man-of-war floating close beside the boat. It turned on its side and then righted itself. It floated cheerfully as a bubble with its long deadly purple filaments trailing a yard behind it in the water. "AQUA MALA," the man said "You whore. From where he swung lightly against his oars he looked down into the water and saw the tiny fish that were coloured like the trailing filaments and swam between them and under the small shade the bubble made as it drifted. They were immune to its poison. But men were not and when some of the filaments would catch on a line and rest there slimy and purple while the old man was working a fish, he would have welts and sores on his arm and hands of the sort that poison ivy or poison oak can give. But these poisonings from the AQUA MALA came quickly and struck like a whiplash. 저편 육지 위에는 뜬구름이 마치 산봉우리들 처럼 솟아 오르고, 해변은 그 뒤의 검푸른 산들 때문에 한줄기의 긴 초록색 선으로 보였다. 바닷물은 이제 검푸른 색, 아니 너무 푸르러서 거의 자주색에 가까왔다. 물속을 들여다 보니 체로 쳐낸 듯한 붉은 플랑크톤이 어두운 물속에 떠 있고 햇빛이 물속에서 이상한 빛으로 반사되고 있는 것이 보였다. 노인은 자기의 낚싯줄이 저 깊이 보이지 않는 곳까지 똑바로 내려져 있는 것을 들여다 보았다. 플랑크톤은 고기가 있는 곳을 나타내기 때문에 노인에게는 그것들이 많이 눈에 띄는 것이 좋았다. 햇빛 때문에 물속에서 나오는 기묘한 광채는 해가 더욱 높이 솟아올라, 맑은 날씨가 되리라는 것을 알 수 있었는데, 이것은 구름의 형상을 보고도 알 수 있었다. 새는 날아가 이제 거의 보이지 않았고 해면에는 여기저기 노랗게 햇볕에 바랜 모자반류의 해조(海藻) 무더기와, 형체가 기묘하고 반짝이는 아교질(阿膠質) 담낭을 가진 무지개빛 고깔 해파리가 뱃전 가까이 떠 있을 뿐 아무것도 나타나지 않았다. 해파리는 옆구리를 보였다가 다시 똑바로 돌아서곤 하였다. 그것들은 진한 보라 빛 실날 같은 긴 꼬리들을 1야드 가량 물속에 질질 끌면서 마치 물거품처럼 빈들빈들 떠 다녔다.
