"He's found fish," he said aloud. No flying fish broke the surface and there was no scattering of bait fish. But as the old man watched, a sall tuna rose in the air, turned and dropped head first into the water. The tuna shone silver in the sun and after he had dropped back into the water another and another rose and they were jumping in all directions, churning the water and leaping in long jumps after the bait. They were circling it and driving it. If they don't travel too fast I will get into them, the old man thought, and he watched the school working the water white and the bird now dropping and dipping into the bait fish that were forced to the surface in their panic. "The bird is great help," the old man said. Just then the stern line came taut under his foot, where he had kept a loop of the line, and he dropped his oars and felt the weight of the small tuna's shivering pull as he held the line firm and commenced to haul it in. The shivering increased as he pulled in and he could see the blue back of the fish in the water and the gold of his sides before he swung him over the side and into the boat. He lay in the stern in the sun, compact and bullet-shaped, his big, unintelligent eyes staring as he thumped his life out against the planking of the boat with the quick shivering strokes of his neat, fast-moving tail. The old man hit him on the head for kindness and kicked him, his body still shuddering, under the shade of the stern. "Albacore," he said aloud. "He'll make a beautiful bait. He'll weigh ten pounds." He did not remember when he had first started to talk aloud when he was by himself. "저 새가 큰 도움이 되는군," 하고 노인이 말했다. 바로 그때 고리처럼 비끄러매서 발밑에 밟고 있었던 고물(배후미) 쪽 낚싯줄이 갑자기 팽팽하게 당겨졌다. 그는 노를 내려놓고 낚싯줄을 단단히 움켜 쥐면서 끌어 들이기 시작했다. 낚시에 걸린 작은 다랑어가 부르르 떨며 안간힘을 쓰고 있는 걸 느낄 수 있었다. 끌어 올리면 올릴수록 고기는 더욱 요동을 쳤다. 이윽고 노인은 고기의 푸른 잔등을 볼 수 있었고, 뱃전 너머로 채어 올리기 전에 등이 금빛으로 번쩍이는 것을 보았다. 다랑어는 햇볕을 받으며 고물 쪽에 놓여졌다. 몸은 통통하고 총알같이 생겼으나 크고 멍청한 눈알은 허공을 바라보며 말쑥하고 재빠른 꼬리로 배의 널판지를 죽어라 두들기고 있었다. 노인은 고기를 생각해서 한 번 크게 대가리를 후려 치고 아직 떨고 있는 몸뚱이를 고물 쪽 차양 아래로 걷어차 버렸다.
