"절대로 그냥 가버릴 리가 없지. 이제 한 바퀴 돌아 올거야, 아마 전에 낚시에 걸려서 혼났던 것을 생각하고 있나 보지." 그때 낚싯줄을 다시 가볍게 건드리는 것을 느끼고 노인은 만족했다. "옳지, 한 바퀴 돌아 온 것뿐이야. 이젠 물겠지. 하고 노인은 말했다. 다시 느끼는 고기의 가벼운 반응을 그렇게 반가와 하고 있을 때였다. 바로 그때, 무엇인가 엄청나게 무겁고 억센 힘이 느껴졌다. 노인은 낚싯줄을 끌리는 대로 물속으로 풀어 주었다. 낚싯줄은 예비로 둔 두개의 사리중 하나에서 풀려나가 자꾸만 밑으로 밑으로 잠겨 들어갔다. 그것이 가볍게 손가락 사이로 풀려 나갈 때 노인은 엄지 손가락과 집게 손가락에 힘을 주는 듯 마는 듯 하였으나 그래도 엄청난 고기의 무게를 느낄 수 있었다.
