"I wish I had the boy," the old man said aloud. "I'm being towed by a fish and I'm the towing bitt. I could make the line fast. But then he could break it. I must hold him all I can and give him line when he must have it. Thank God he is travelling and not going down." What I will do if he decides to go down, I don't know. What I'll do if he sounds and dies I don't know. But I'll do something. There are plenty of things I can do. He held the line against his back and watched its slant in the water and the skiff moving steadily to the north-west. This will kill him, the old man thought. He can't do this for ever. But four hours later the fish was still swimming steadily out to sea, towing the skiff, and the old man was still braced solidly with the line across his back. "It was noon when I hooked him," he said. "And I have never seen him." He had pushed his straw hat hard down on his head before he hooked the fish and it was cutting his forehead. He was thirsty too and he got down on his knees and, being careful not to jerk on the line, moved as far into the bow as he could get and reached the water bottle with one hand. He opened it and drank a little. Then he rested against the bow. He rested sitting on the unstepped mast and sail and tried not to think but only to endure. Then he looked behind him and saw that no land was visible. That makes no difference, he thought. I can always come in on the glow from Havana. There are two more hours before the sun sets and maybe he will come up before that. If he doesn't maybe he will come up with the moon. If he does not do that maybe he will come up with the sunrise. I have no cramps and I feel strong. "고기한테 끌려가고 있으니 내 몸이 마치 밧줄을 비끄러 맨 말뚝이 된 셈이로군, 줄을 붙들어 맬 수도 있겠지만 그렇게 되면 저 고기가 줄을 끊어 버릴 게다. 할 수 있는 데까지 그냥 붙들고 있으면서 고기가 줄이 더 필요 하다면 그냥 더 풀어 줄 뿐이다. 녀석이 옆으로 달아 나기만 하고 아래로 내려가지 않는 것만도 천만다행이다.저 녀석이 갑자기 곤두박질을 하면 어쩌나. 바다 밑바닥까지 내려가서 그냥 죽어 버린다면? 어쩔 수 없겠지. 하지만 무슨 수가 있겠지. 그래도 내가 할 수 있는 방도가 여러 가지 있을 테니까. 노인은 등에 낚싯줄을 멘채 버티었다. 그리고 물속으로 비스듬히 내려간 줄과 북서쪽으로 꾸준히 끌려가고 있는 배를 지켜 보았다. 이렇게 힘을 쓰다간 저도 지탱하지 못해 죽을텐데, 하고 노인은 생각했다. 끝없이 끌고 가지는 못할 테니까. 그러나 그후 4시간이 지났을 때에도 고기는 여전히 이 조각배를 끌고 자꾸만 바다 멀리 나가고 있었다. 노인은 노인대로 여전히 낚싯줄을 등에 멘 채 단단하게 버티고 있었다. "저 놈이 걸린 것이 정오쯤 이었는데, 어떻게 생긴 놈인지 아직 한번도 보지 못했으니." 하고 노인은 말했다. 고기가 걸리기 전에 노인은 밀짚모자를 푹 내려쓰고 있었는데 이것이 쓸려서 이제 앞이마가 아파 왔다. 게다가 목도 말랐다. 그는 무릎을 끓고 내려와 낚싯줄이 젖혀지지 않도록 조심해 가면서 뱃머리 쪽으로 갈 수 있는 데까지 기어 가서 한손을 뻗쳐 물병을 집었다. 그는 물병 마개를 열고 조금 들이마셨다. 그리고는 이물(뱃머리)에 기대어 쉬었다. 그는 돛자리에서 떼어 낸 돛대와 돛 위에 걸터 앉아 쉬면서 이것을 견디어 내야 한다는 일념밖에는 아무 생각도 하지 않으려고 했다. 뒤를 돌아다 보았으나 육지는 보이지 않았다. 안 보여도 상관없지, 하고 노인은 생각했다. 돌아올 때는 언제든지 하바나 항구에서 비치는 불빛을 길잡이로 삼으면 된다. 해가 지려면 아직도 두어 시간은 더 걸릴 텐데, 아마 그전에 저 고기가 올라 올지도 몰라. 그때까지 안 올라 오면 달이 뜰 때까지 떠 오르겠지. 만일 그때까지도 안 올라 온다면 아침 해가 돋을 때쯤에 올라 오겠지. 아직은 쥐도 안 나고 기운도 넉넉하다.
