It is he that has the hook in his mouth. But what a fish to pull like that. He must have his mouth shut tight on the wire. I wish I could see him. I wish I could see him only once to know what I have against me. The fish never changed his course nor his direction all that night as far as the man could tell from watching the stars. It was cold after the sun went down and the old man's sweat dried cold on his back and his arms and his old legs. During the day he had taken the sack that covered the bait box and spread it in the sun to dry. After the sun went down he tied it around his neck so that it hung down over his back and he cautiously worked it down under the line that was across his shoulders now. The sack cushioned the line and he had found a way of leaning forward against the bow so that he was almost comfortable. The position actually was only somewhat less intolerable; but he thought of it as almost comfortable. I can do nothing with him and he can do nothing with me, he thought. Not as long as he keeps this up. Once he stood up and urinated over the side of the skiff and looked at the stars and checked his course. The line showed like a phosphorescent streak in the water straight out from his shoulders. They were moving more slowly now and the glow of Havana was not so strong, so that he knew the current must be carrying them to the eastward. If I lose the glare of Havana we must be going more to the eastward, he thought. For if the fish's course held true I must see it for many more hours. I wonder how the baseball came out in the grand leagues today, he thought. It would be wonderful to do this with a radio. Then he thought, think of it always. Think of what you are doing. 입에 낚시가 물린 것은 저쪽이니까. 그러나 저렇게 줄기차게 끌고 가니 도대체 어떤 고기일까. 철사를 문 입을 필경 꽉 다물고 있을 게다. 한번 볼 수 있었으면 좋겠다. 어떤 놈하고 내가 맞 붙었는지 관상(觀相)이라도 한번 봐 두었으면 좋겠구나. 고기는 밤 새도록 방향도 바꾸지 않고 똑같은 코스로 달렸다. 이것은 별을 쳐다보고 알 수 있었다. 해가 진 뒤 날씨가 서늘 해지고 노인의 등과 팔과 늙은 다리는 땀이 식어 차가왔다. 노인은 아까 낮에 미끼상자를 덮었던 부대를 꺼내서 미리 햇볕에 말려 놓았었다. 이제 해가 지자 그 부대 끝을 목에 메고 등뒤로 처져 내려오게 하였다. 그리고는 그 부대를 이제 그의 어깨를 짓누르고 있는 낚싯줄 밑으로 조심조심 집어 넣었다. 방석처럼 부대 위에 낚싯줄을 얹어 놓은 셈이었다. 그리고 몸을 앞으로 굽혀 이물[뱃머리]에 기댈 수 있게 되니 거의 편안한 자세가 되었다. 사실은 아까보다 견디기가 조금 나아졌다는 것뿐 이었으나 노인은 이것이 퍽 편안한 것이라고 생각했다. 나도 별 수 없으나 저놈도 나를 어찌할 도리가 없을 게다, 하고 노인은 생각했다. 저 녀석이 이 짓을 계속하는 한 어쩔 도리가 없지. 한번은 노인이 일어서서 뱃전 너머로 소변을 보고서 별을 쳐다보며 방향을 살폈다. 그의 어깨에서 물속으로 똑바로 뻗은 낚싯줄은 마치 인광(燐光) 줄기처럼 보였다. 배는 이제 아까보다 더 천천히 움직이고 있었다. 하바나의 불빛이 그다지 훤하지가 못하고 희미해진 것으로 보아 배가 조류(潮流) 때문에 동쪽으로 움직이고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 하바나의 불빛이 아주 안 보이게 된다면 배가 생각보다 훨씬 더 동쪽으로 나가 있는 것이 틀림없을 것이라고 노인은 생각했다. 왜냐하면 고기가 제 방향대로만 지켜 간다면 하바나의 불빛이 이대로 몇시간은 더 보일 테니까. 오늘의 대 리그전의 야구시합은 어떻게 되었을까, 하고 노인은 다시 생각했다. 항상 이 일에만 생각을 집중 해야지, 어리석은 생각을 해서는 안된다.
